What is .mw ccTLD ?
What is .MW ?
.MW is the country code for Malawi on the Internet. It is the country code top level domain, ccTLD, for Malawi. A domain on the internet is used as a name or identity where Internet services such as e-mail or websites can be run. .mw is for Malawi.
If you register a domain under .mw such as maluwa.mw, then you can have your own personalised e-mail addresses such as pink@maluwa.mw or run your own website at www.maluwa.mw.
Anyone, any organisation from anywhere can register, own and operate a domain under .mw upon approval by the .mw ccTLD. Instructions are available on this site. Once you register your .mw domain, it will work at any ISP of your choice.
As has already been demonstrated in Malawi, a name is an important symbol worth fighting for. We at Malawi SDNP would like to invite all Malawians, companies and organisations in Malawi to take pride in their country name and register their domains under .mw. There is no longer need to register under any other top level domain such as .com or .net when you have your own country top level domain to use and to be proud of.
So .MW is where Malawians can choose to run their Internet services under their own country name. For example macra.org.mw is a domain name that identifies an organisation under Malawi and www.macra.org.mw identifies the website for the organisation.
A country can have only one ccTLD and there is only one ccTLD manager. The manager for .mw is Malawi SDNP. All the services of the ccTLD can be accessed through the website http://www.registrar.mw that Malawi SDNP has established or by e-mail to domains@registrar.mw.
A domain registered under .mw belongs to the one who has registered it, the registrant. The registrant can use the domain at any ISP of their choice. And when the owner of the domain decides to change ISPs, they have the freedom and the power to move with their domain. The beauty of this is that the e-mail addresses used by the registrant do not have to change as one changes service providers because the registrant owns the name.
In turn all ccTLDs run their services under root name services run by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, IANA, which is a function carried out by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN. Created by the US government, ICANN is going through a reform process with the aim of making it more international, with a policy development process where more of the global Internet community participates. One can follow developments on these at the ICANN website http://www.icann.org. Malawi SDNP is registered under IANA and ICANN as the ccTLD manager for Malawi and is participating in the ICANN reform process.
Because a ccTLD represents a country just like its land or flag, many countries treat their country code top level domain, its protection and management as issues of national sovereignty. In many countries where the Internet forms a major part of the national economy, the ccTLD is a national asset and resource that is regulated by the country's policies, laws and national assembly. We believe that as we develop, this is the prosperity direction in which Malawi is heading. The .mw ccTLD is therefore an important national asset that we need to use and be proud of.
Just think about it, who would you be if another person took your name? If another person or organisation registers your domain name that you consider to be a symbol of you or your organisation then you will be at a disadvantage when they use the name to market products and services say on a website or through e-mail using the domain. At .mw we can show you many international organisations that take this seriously and you should too. So why not register your domain at .mw to fully own and protect your name?
